It’s exciting when new restaurants open, but sometimes you just want to eat something comforting and familiar. After all, Chapel Hill is a town built around tradition, and residents really do value the restaurants they grew up on. Thankfully, our apartments in Chapel Hill are minutes from local restaurants serving comfort food classics. Our neighborhood favorites include:
Food & Wine claims Crook’s Corner is “one of the most iconic restaurants in the American South.” While that’s a pretty bold statement, locals tend to agree. In fact, Crook’s has even been named a James Beard Foundation America’s Classic restaurant. If you don’t believe the hype, try it for yourself. You can start with the deviled eggs and then order the shrimp and grits, but be sure to leave room for a slice of Atlantic Beach pie. You can order takeout online.
Mama Dip’s Kitchen
Since 1976, Mama Dip’s has been serving delicious Southern favorites. Menu standouts include the fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, and fried chicken. You’ll also find catfish, chicken and dumplings, and Brunswick stew on the menu, along with sides like fried okra, black-eyed peas, and mashed potatoes. You can call ahead of time to place an order for pickup.
If you like bacon, lettuce, and tomato, you have to try the famous B.L.T. at Merritt’s Grill. While you’re at it, make it a double or even a triple. There are also plenty of other delicious options, including pimento cheese and chicken salad sandwiches, burgers, salads, and seasonal soups. You can order for delivery through Uber Eats, Door Dash, or Grubhub.
